A Glimpse into Barcelona
Laybrith of the Rambla
Having never truly traveled through Europe, Barcelona was my first taste of what it was like to explore the continent of empires and kings. Barcelona, in particular, often dominates headlines for the local’s general hostility towards foreign tourists. It is very much a paradox that a city that is so dependent on tourism would be wanting to push away the very people who arrive in flocks to support their businesses.
Despite the desire for all tourists to steer clear of Barcelona, the city has not lost any of its classical charm. The historic Ramblas and winding alleyways are what attracts these droves of tour groups and travelers to the streets of Barcelona. There is so much more to the city than just high-end shopping in the old Renaissance quarter. It takes some extra wandering or a keen eye to find the true heart of Barcelona.
Pilgrimage to Sagrada Familia
The highlight of any trip is, of course, the gothic-inspired spires of Sagrada Familia. For over a century stockades have turned into looming cranes, all bring to life the dream of architect Antoni Gaudi. While completion is still nearly a decade away, the symbolism and borderline obscurity of the church’s architecture strikes the curiosity of the faithful and non-believers alike.

Golden Beaches
One thing that is overlooked by many people who travel to Barcelona is the long stretches of beautiful beach which stretches down the length of the city. Doing the warmer months slews of people can be seen soaking up the rays on the beach or just enjoying a good book. More so than those just looking to lounge, the golden beaches are famous for their raging parties and DJs which attract youth throughout Europe.
The Allure of Barcelona
A city is just that, a massive ant hill where the human population masses in their concrete hives. There are millions of these refuges throughout the world providing many with both employment and convenience. What makes a city special is being able to get lost in the streets and finding those quiet sparks of humanity.
In Barcelona, its soul is found in the greenery which fills the narrow city streets, the antique balconies with Catalonian flags waving proudly, and the fresh laundry strung overhead across alleyways. Barcelona, like many places in Europe, is a paradise for youth culture to flourish, may it be in the form of graffiti, photography, or music.
View From Carmel Bunker
One of the best places to get that breathtaking view of that Barcelona skyline is from the top of Carmel Bunker. These anti-aircraft defenses are now adorned with vibrant graffiti and attracts young Instagrammers and couples to take in the stunning sunset and sunrise views.
What you may find disappointing, however, is that the city of Barcelona is overwhelmingly dull in color. Without the striking yellows and oranges from the sun playing off of the tanned buildings, Barcelona looks no more than a concrete hole from above. The city’s saving grace is the geometric avenues which will appeal to any lovers of symmetry and city planning.
Even with an uninspiring skyline, the view is still one that you will not forget easily. With the Mediterranean in the distance and sea breeze brushing past your face, Barcelona is not a city you merely see, but feel.

Top of Montjuic Hill
Montjuic Hill is so much more than just another viewpoint of the city of Barcelona. The historic castle and terraces full of gardens and hiking trails bring in strolling elderly couples and energetic joggers daily. With art museums, sports stadiums, and unique graveyards to be explored, visitors can easily spend several days hiking the various trails on Montjuic Hill. At night, crowds which could compete with that of a rock concert mass around the musical fountain to enjoy the display of colors.
There is no one thing that comes to mind as being the highlight of traveling to Barcelona. The churches, city streets, and hiking all seem to be nothing more than bullet points on the list of things to do in the city. The appeal of Barcelona is the ambiance, that indescribable feeling which hangs in the air which makes humble alleyways a muse for artists and photographers from around the world.
